WHISPERS OF THE OLD GODS FAQ
1. Expansion Information
On April 26 2016 (April 27 for EU and Asia), the new Hearthstone Expansion “Whispers of the Old Gods” releases (referred to hereafter as WotOG). The set contains 134 new cards, with each class getting 3 Common, 3 Rare, 2 Epic, and 1 Legendary card. The remaining neutral cards consist of 23 Common, 9 Rare, 10 Epic, and 12 Legendary rarity cards.
Make sure to have at least one free Quest slot before the release, as you will get these new Quests (which will otherwise override your lowest reward quest in the quest log):
- Win 2 Games in Standard: Get 5 WotOG boosters and unlock the following quest:
- Win 5 Games in Standard: Get 5 WotOG boosters.
In addition, you will receive 3 WotOG boosters for playing during launch week, and opening your first WotOG booster will award you the legendary C’thun along with two Beckoners of Evil, in addition to the booster’s other contents.
Along with the expansion, a new board and format are introduced, with the latter detailed below.
2. Format Changes
With WotOG, the Standard format is introduced, which is a rotating format containing cards from the Classic Set as well as the two most recent expansions and adventures. This means that standard will be a format that changes with every future release every year, rotating out the older releases. A notable exclusion is the Rewards set, meaning Captain's Parrot and Old Murk-eye are not part of standard despite being rewarded via the classic set. Those cards can be acquired via doing the prerequisite quests until May 1st 2016, and after that they become craftable.
Standard will be available for the following game modes:
- Casual
- Ranked
- Friendly Challenges
- Certain Tavern Brawls
Standard, as the name implies, will be the only format eligible to receive tournament points, whether through ladder or tournaments.
Hearthstone, as we currently know it, will continue to exist as the Wild format. This is also the format that is used in arena, so you will have a wide pool of cards to draft from! Note that C’thun and his related cards will not be available in Arena!
Ranks are tracked separately for Wild and Standard, with the friends list displaying the highest rank you have achieved (whether Wild or Standard). A Wild rank will be distinguishable by the vines on the icon. When you login after the format introduction in April, your Wild and Standard ranks will be set to your current ladder rank. Only one reward chest will be awarded at the end of a season, based on your highest achieved rank.
3. Classic Card Changes
A recent patch introduced some changes to cards from the Classic set. Here is a summary of the changes:
- Ancient of Lore – Now draws 1 card instead of 2
- Force of Nature – Mana cost decreased from 6 to 5, Treants no longer have Charge and no longer die at the end of the turn
- Keeper of the Grove – Health reduced from 4 to 2
- Ironbeak Owl – Mana cost increased from 2 to 3
- Big Game Hunter – Mana cost increased from 3 to 5
- Hunter’s Mark – Mana cost increased from 0 to 1
- Blade Flurry – Mana cost increased from 2 to 4 and only affects Minions
- Knife Juggler – Attack reduced from 3 to 2
- Leper Gnome – Attack reduced from 2 to 1
- Arcane Golem – Health increased from 2 to 4, no longer has Charge
- Molten Giant – Mana cost increased from 20 to 25
- Master of Disguise – Stealth granted by this card now only lasts until the start of the next turn
For a limited time, you can disenchanted any non-basic card affected by the change for full dust value. If you are wondering whether you should disenchant a particular changed card, note that there is no risk associated with doing so; you can always recraft the card later at a net even.
4. WotOG FAQ
Here is the current FAQ, with a summary of all the card interactions as currently known.
General
- Cards that summon a random minion will only summon from the mode you are playing. In standard, you have a chance for standard set minions. In Wild, you can get any collectable minions.
- Cost changing “forbidden” cards can be cast with 0 mana remaining if you need to cycle a card for whatever reason (Gadgetzan Auctioneer, Counterspell).
C’thun
- Cards that say “If your C’Thun has at least X attack” do count temporary buffs (Abusive Sergeant)
- If C’Thun gets returned to your hand, it keeps its buff.
- C’Thun will appear for both you and your opponent whenever you play a card that buffs C’Thun, or interacts with him in anyway. Likewise, when you play a minion that requires C’Thun to have at least 10 attack, C’Thun will also appear.
- C’thun buffs are an aura effect attached to the player. For example, if a player Thoughtsteals/Entombs their opponent’s C’thun without having played any C’thun buff cards of their own, their C’thun will be the default 6/6. Similarly, when a dead C’thun gets resurrected/added to your hand later on, it will include all previously played buffs.
N’Zoth
- Only resummons cards that include the Deathrattle in the card text, not cards like Unearthed Raptor. In other words, he will not resummon artificially created Deathrattle minions.
- If a Rogue copied Deathrattle Minions via Shadowcaster, N’Zoth will resummon them with their original statline.
Yogg-Saron
- Yogg-Saron will stop resolving once the first player dies.
- Will cast one spell for each spell you casted from your hand.
- All spell targets are random, if a spell cannot find a valid target, it will not do anything (Assassination on an empty board will do nothing)
- If Yogg-Saron dies during his Battlecry, spells will continue to cast.
- Yogg-Saron will only cast spells that are in the format you are playing.
- Spells casted from Yogg-Saron will not trigger effects such as Mana Wyrm, and Flamewaker.
- Spells casted with Overload does not currently Overload your Hero (Can change).
- If the card is a Choose one ability, it will choose one at random.
- Forbidden spells will use how much mana you have remaining.
- Lorewalker Cho will not copy spells played from Yogg-Saron
Shifter Zerus
- Shifter Zerus shifts at the start of your turn. He can only be played as Zerus the turn you draw him.
- Does not keep changing once played.
- Will have a special border around it differentiating it from other cards and a tooltip.
- If a shifted Zerus is bounced back to the hand, you will receive a copy of the new minion, not Zerus himself.
Call of the Wild
- If your board is too full, the creatures are summoned in alphabetical order. Huffer > Leokk > Misha always huffer
Fandral Staghelm
- Choose One cards will have both effects. Effects are triggered in the most beneficial order, if there is no clear benefit to the order in which they are triggered, they activate in the order they appear on the card.
- Minions that are summoned after Fandral is dead do not get the added bonus, but existing minions keep it.
- Cards that have a choice and a transformation effect have a new form that includes both effects.
- Druid of the Flame, despite both effects setting to fixed stats, will be a 5/5.
- Druid of the Saber, Flame and Claw have unique card art when played with Fandral on the board.
Forbidden Ancient
- Cannot gain more stats than mana crystals spent, so Brann Bronzebeard will not provide the amount of stats.
Cho’Gall
- “Forbidden” Spells will be cast as if you had 0 mana.
- If the spell cost more than the amount of health you have, you can’t cast the spell.
- You only have the turn you play Cho’Gall to cast his spell.
Thing From Below
- Cost will still be reduced even when it’s not in your hand. (Will reduce while in deck).
Validated Doomsayer
- If Validated Doomsayer receives any stat modification to attack (Like Aldor Peacekeeper), Doomsayer’s attack will still be set to 7 at the start of your turn.
Steward of Darkshire
- Will apply Divine Shield to all minions summoned with 1 health, this means all Silver Hand Recruits summoned via Hero power or spells like “Muster for Battle” & “Stand Against Darkness” will also get Divine Shield.
- If you have Steward of Darkshire on the field when Noble Sacrifice is activated, the 2/1 will also get Divine Shield.
- Steward of Darkshire only works on minions that have 1 HP according to their card text. A minion altered by a spell (e.g. Repentance) or summoned wounded with 1 HP (e.g. Injured Kvaldir) will not trigger Steward.
- If both Hobgoblin and Steward of Darkshire are on the field, and a 1/1 is played, Hobgoblin will take priority and Steward will not trigger.
Shadow Strike
- Can be used on an undamaged hero.
Renounce Darkness
- Class is chosen randomly, as well as the cards.
Doomcaller
- If C’thun is transformed (Polymorph, Hex, etc) or removed from the game in a way other than dying (such as milling), Doomcaller’s effect will not add C’thun back to the deck.
