iPhone-6

Bottom line – The iPhone 6 is a great upgrade for current iPhone owners, or for anyone, really. It manages to provide a much larger display in a phone that’s still small enough to handle easily. It’s my recommendation for the best smartphone you can buy.

I went into this review expecting to find it was a niche gadget, reserved for those seeking the absolute top-of-the-line, convenience be damned. Instead, I found myself getting strangely comfortable with a phone I still find difficult to use one-handed. In short, the 6 is my favorite current smartphone, but the 6 Plus is its closest competition.

First, the iPhone 6 gets most of the basics right. Existing iPhone owners won’t have to learn new software or buy new cables. The screen is a bit more readable in sunlight than its best-selling rival, the Samsung Galaxy S5. Apps are snappy; the iPhone 6’s processor is up to 20% faster than last year’s iPhone.

That 0.7-inch bump in screen size from the 5S to the 6 buys you a lot. You get an extra row of apps on the home screen and can see an extra email in your inbox. Long-form reading is easier: When using the Kindle app, setting fonts to roughly the same size, I got about 30 more words on each iPhone 6 screen than on an iPhone 5S. (That means a third less time turning virtual pages.) And anyone with poor vision will appreciate a new “zoomed” mode that’s like reading glasses for your iPhone.

The iPhone 6’s biggest drawback is its battery. It isn’t a deal-breaker—I was able to make it through the day on a single charge. But when I stress-tested the handsets by cranking up screen brightness to 100% and streaming video, the iPhone 6 battery died just before my iPhone 5S’s did.

Ο David Pierce (The Verge) εντυπωσιάστηκε από την αναβαθμισμένη κάμερα του iPhone 6:

There’s one feature that stands out, though, the one that most strongly makes the iPhone 6’s case as the best smartphone on the planet: the camera. It still shoots 8-megapixel images, but this time does so with a new sensor. It also uses what Apple calls “focus pixels” to achieve phase-detect autofocus, which is just astonishingly fast on the iPhone 6. I move the phone around and it never appears to be focusing, yet everything is always crisp and ready.

Ο Nilay Patel (The Verge) κατέληξε στο συμπέρασμα πως το iPhone 6 Plus θα μπορούσε να αποτελέσει τον βασικό του Η/Υ:

With the right software changes, I could basically use an iPhone 6 Plus all day long, for everything from sending messages to editing documents to watching videos. A do-everything phone like the 6 Plus would eventually allow Apple to push the iPad even further towards becoming the true laptop replacement it was always meant to be.

While consumers are already clamoring for the larger of the two phones, I found the iPhone 6 Plus too large and unwieldy to use as my daily driver. It does offer better battery life and an improved camera stabilizer compared with the iPhone 6, but its size proved to be more than I wanted to grapple with on a regular basis. Think of it this way: The iPhone 6 Plus is only slightly smaller than an iPad Mini, which means one-handed use is messy even with Reachability, and holding it up to a normal-size head looks slightly absurd.

People have preordered on faith, since they haven’t seen these super-sized iPhones up close or experienced what they feel like in pockets and handbags. I have and let me be reassuring — you won’t regret your decision, though going big may require a small adjustment, and my experience wasn’t totally trouble-free.

Ο Molly Wood (New York Times) θεωρεί πως το iPhone 6 είναι “λίγο μικρό” και το iPhone 6 Plus “λίγο μεγάλο”:

In its quest to deliver bigger phones to a market clamoring for them, Apple has made one phone that is actually a little too small and one that’s a little too big… The slim new iPhones aren’t a big-screen slam-dunk, but they work well, as we have come to expect from Apple.

O Brad Molen (Engadget) ψηφίζει υπέρ του iPhone 6:

The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 features a respectable display size and a comfortable in-hand fit; it’s also my personal favorite after using both for several days. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, on the flipside, isn’t as easy to hold in one hand, but you’ll want it if you’re hoping to get an iPad-like phone with great battery life and a lot more screen real estate. This year’s iPhones aren’t groundbreaking, nor are they perfect. But they demonstrate something far more important to Apple’s success in the long run: freshness.

The Good: A bigger, crisp display, improved LTE and Wi-Fi speeds, better camera autofocus, bumped-up storage capacities to 128GB at the top end, and NFC Apple Pay mobile wallet features on the horizon.
The Bad: In early tests, the iPhone 6’s battery doesn’t fare any better than last year’s model; some Android phones fit an even-larger 5-inch screen into the same size frame; it lacks the optical image stabilization of the bigger, more expensive 6 Plus.
The Bottom Line: The iPhone 6 delivers a bigger screen while remaining easy to handle, with plenty of features to satisfy everyone — and the promise of Apple Pay on the horizon to potentially sweeten the deal even further.
